RobinsonĪLL FOUR GOOD OL’ BOYS BOOKS IN ONE BOX SET Rom Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author M. Treachery in Death (In Death, Book 32) by J.D. Now Peabody, Eve, and Eve’s husband, Roarke, are trying to get the hard evidence they need to bring down the dirty cops-knowing all the while that the two are willing to kill to keep their secret. It doesn’t take long to realize they’re both crooked-guilty not just of corruption but of murder. After a hard workout, she’s all alone in the locker room when the gym door clatters open, and-while hiding inside a shower stall trying not to make a sound-she overhears two fellow officers arguing. This is Peabody’s first case as primary detective-good thing she learned from the master.īut soon Peabody stumbles upon a trickier situation. In this thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon, Eve Dallas tracks down those who break the law-including the ones sworn to uphold it.ĭetective Eve Dallas and her partner, Peabody, are following up on a senseless crime-an elderly grocery owner killed by three stoned punks for nothing more than kicks and snacks. Rowan, meanwhile, is a firecracker of wit, and although she certainly knows what racism looks like, she’s beginning to understand that her wealth has largely protected her from the worst of it. Will is often a jerk and a coward, and he’s less of a progressive hero who subscribes to today’s ideals of diversity and more a kid who just doesn’t want to see his friends die. Narration alternates between Will and Rowan, giving both depth. Over ninety years later, rising senior Rowan knows little of the riots, despite being the daughter of a prominent African-American figure in Tulsa, until the remains of a skeleton are discovered on the grounds of her family’s estate and Rowan launches herself into an investigation that leads her to Will’s complicated story. Despite his mother’s Osage heritage, seventeen-year-old Will looks white, and during the simmering tensions leading up to the massacre, he is faced with two choices: prove himself above his “half-breed” status and join the KKK, or protect the two black children he befriended while working at his father’s shop. Over the course of two days in 1921, Greenwood, a predominantly black part of Tulsa, was burned to the ground during race riots, and hundreds of people, most of them African American, were killed. Clichés notwithstanding, Revolution 2020 takes the reader into the dark underbelly of India’s private education sector, where almost everything involves a bribe or something equally unsavoury. I just can’t emphasise the last bit sufficiently enough. It has clichés, a half-decent plot which creaks just a little bit, parts of which could have come from a Harold Robbins or Jeffrey Archer novel, politically incorrect characters who shoot from the hip and could belong to any town in India, drama and a large dose of reality. Revolution 2020 has all the usual Bhagat ingredients. However, Bhagat is such a good story teller that he keeps his reader on tenterhooks till the end of the book, open to a number of possibilities, wondering how exactly the story would reach the end already revealed at the beginning of the story. Since Gopal is lonely, it’s obvious that he didn’t ‘get’ the girl, the girl being the very pretty Aarti. Gopal has an obvious drinking problem as well as an urge to tell his ‘story’, something which turns out to be very convenient, since Gopal’s story forms the rest of this novel. Chetan Bhagat goes to GangaTech, a private engineering college in Varanasi to give a motivational lecture and meets its Director, the very young and very lonely Gopal Mishra. Prescient and sobering, Zoboi’s book is a vital story for young readers in a tumultuous time. Moreover, they accurately depict the justice system as an engine fine-tuned to crush the urban poor and young Black men in particular. His experiences lend a visceral gravitas to Zoboi’s pen, and together they capture Amal’s emotional struggles as he grasps for hope despite his circumstances. Yusef himself was a victim of wrongful incarceration when he and four other young men were convicted of a crime they did not commit. Zoboi worked with prison reform activist Yusef Salaam to create Amal’s story in verse.
